HNS is proud to recognize Dr. Shelley Peery as the October 2011 Member of the Month.
Hometown: San Francisco, CA and the East BayEmployer: Self! Just launched my private practice fully in February!
Clinical population you work with: children and adults, about 25% Spanish speaking, I see everything from Autism to Alzheimer’s
Research interests and/or current research projects: My interest in forensic research is piqued. There are so few studies validating use of effort tests in people with low education, it’s got me curious.
How did you get bitten by the Hispanic neuropsychology bug? Being bilingual, I always wondered how these tests would work in people of various cultures. Wanting to do a good job, I studied cross cultural assessment in general and how our tests work in Spanish speakers specifically.
Do you have any hidden talents? Nothing to speak of.. I can write upside down and backwards with both hands simultaneously, but that’s just odd…! (It took being bored in HS to figure that out)
What is the closest you’ve come to having your 15 minutes of fame? Before becoming a neuropsychologist, I taught high school. We went on strike for several days one Fall. I was interviewed by a number of newspapers and quoted in three! I was also interviewed on the radio.
When was the last time you tried something new? I recently started riding my bike to work.
What do you have that you cannot live without? Apparently, Netflix streaming… ! Oh, and my family
I moved back to CA to be near them and it’s been wonderful.
What is your favorite quote? “People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.”
