May 2011 Member of the Month, Ricardo Winkel, Ph.D.

HNS is proud to recognize Ricardo Winkel, Ph.D. as the May 2011 Member of the Month.

Hometown: I live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area, with offices in San Francisco and Oakland.

Employer: I am self-employed.

Clinical population you work with: I have a clinical and forensic practice.  I see adults and adolescents, inpatient and outpatient.

Research interests and/or current research projects: I am a psychoanalyst, and I’m interested in applying psychoanalytic ideas to my forensic work, and to articulate interrelationships between neuropsychological and psychoanalytic constructs.

How did you get bitten by the Hispanic neuropsychology bug? I was born in Argentina and speak Spanish fluently.  It was an easy, natural step to use Spanish in both my clinical and forensic work, including neuropsychology.

Do you have any hidden talents? I have black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do, and when my back issues permit, I like to keep up practicing martial arts.  I’ve found that they beneficial effects beyond physical fitness.  They seem to help focus and relax, which is a most welcome thing in the midst of a packed work schedule.

What profession other than yours would you like to try? I’m quite happy with my worklife.  The blend of psychoanalytic and forensic work, with a major neuropsychological component (approximately 50-60%) keeps me challenged, involved and gratified.  These fields are intellectually rewarding to me and I find our colleagues among the smartest, most inspiring of thinkers and professionals.

When was the last time you tried something new? Last week I went sailing on a speedboat in Miami.

What do you have that you cannot live without? My wife and our two children.

What is your favorite quote? “Only a life lived for others is a life worth while” (Albert Einstein)
