Summer 2011
Dear HNS members:
It has been a great honor to serve as your 2011 HNS President. I would like to thank Tedd Judd, Shelley Peery, and Leo Shea for making this such an easy transition. We have had a number of developments since I started my term last fall that I am quite proud of and excited to share with you.
SAVE THE DATE! At the NAN meeting in Marco Island, Florida (11/16 through 11/19) HNS will be cosponsoring several presentations. Registration for the conference will be done via NAN’s website.
Join us on Friday 11/18 for two top-notch CE presentations.
- Traumatic brain injury in Spanish-speaking individuals: Research Findings and Clinical Implications
Presenters: Juan Carlos Arango Lasprilla, Ph.D. and Lillian Flores Stevens, Ph.D.
- Assessing Intelligence and Pre-Morbid Intelligence in the Spanish Speaker
Presenters: Kristin R. Krueger, Ph.D. and James P. Choca, Ph.D.
On Saturday 11/19 HNS will hold a business meeting at noon. We will be hosting our elections, so please plan to attend this important meeting. Lunch will be provided!
The Executive Committee is also putting together a social event to include dinner and dancing. More details will be provided as they become available!
Now for some more exciting developments…
Mentoring Committee: HNS is in the process of devising travel and research awards for our student members. The first round of applications will be due later this fall. Details will be provided on our website (www.hnps.org) and listserve.
Training Database: HNS has conducted a survey of training opportunities in Hispanic neuropsychology at the graduate, practicum, internship, and postdoctoral levels. These findings are now available on our website (www.hnps.org). If you know of a training site not on our list, please get in touch with Heather Rodas Romero (heatherrromero@gmail.com).
Database of Neuropsychological Tests in Spanish: This database, with over 170 tests, is now in the process of being moved to a Wiki. Members will be able to add to this database and provide comments/reviews for each measure. What is most exciting about this endeavor is that the Wiki can be used as a place to gather and share normative data! If you would like to be involved with this project please get in touch with Xavier Cagigas (XCagigas@mednet.ucla.edu).
Member of the Month: The HNS Member of the Month forum was started in April to recognize and thank a member who has supported the Society’s endeavors. This forum will not only help members learn more about each other, but we anticipate that it will spark some research and/or clinical collaborations. Member of the month bio’s are posted to our website and our listserve.
HNS Website: A new HNS website is currently under development! Thanks to Delia Silva for her help with this labor intensive project. This new site will include a member’s only section that will provide a place for the Executive Committee to keep everyone abreast of ongoing projects. It will also host client handouts and forms. Our new website will also have a job and announcements page, so please don’t hesitate to send those my way (drrenteria@gmail.com).
Membership Drive: HNS’s membership drive at the beginning of this year was successful, and we now have 135 [SP1] active members. If you have not yet done so, please renew your membership so that we can continue to strength our organization. One of the benefits of membership is the Applied Neuropsychology journal. If you have experienced any delivery issues, please notify our secretary, Shelley Peery, at shelleypeeryphd@gmail.com.
Membership Survey: HNS is interested in working for you. In the coming weeks you will receive a link to a brief member survey. Please take a few minutes to let us know how to best meet your needs.
If you have any questions about any of our current projects, would like to become involved in a committee or need to be added to the listserve, please drop me a line at drrenteria@gmail.com.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the HNS Executive Committee,
Laura Renteria, Ph.D.
2011 HNS President
[SP1]Although the 135 figure includes 2010 members, they are technically still our members. Plus, higher numbers of membership is helpful in establishing us as an organization that can fairly be said to represent the Hispanic np community, which is important for giving our statements more weight
